Guidance Counselor - Upper elementary/Middle School (Grades 6-8) Part time

Job Duties:

The School Counselor supports students and their families to ensure positive social interactions and academic success. The School Counselor is expected to collaborate with teachers, parents, administrators and other school staff to create a safe, healthy, and supportive learning environment for all students. The School Counselor identifies concerns and trends at the individual, class, and school level, and works in concert with the Executive Director, Leadership Team and Counseling Team to implement effective interventions and initiatives. This job description is meant to provide structure to the responsibilities and accountability of this position. There may be additional responsibilities that the School Counselor undertakes or that is assigned as needs of students and of the school arise. The School Counselor reports to the Executive Director.

In the following areas, the School Counselor will:

Consultation:

  • Provide recommendations to administration and staff on how to best support the social, emotional and academic needs of all students.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and administration to find effective solutions for meeting learning and behavior needs.
  • Coordinate action team, student study teams, 504 meetings, consult with teaching teams, disciplinary review meetings within the school as needed.
  • Provide information regarding community services available to students and families; make appropriate referrals as needed. Be well-informed about community resources.

Intervention:

  • Collaborate with the School Psychologist and behavior specialists to provide effective interventions for students.
  • Provide counseling services to students to help resolve and manage problems that interfere with school performance.
  • Meet with families to help address their needs and the needs of their children.
  • Act as a contact/liaison with social services and/or community agencies providing services to students. Including families with high needs and act as the homeless student contact person.
  • Report to crisis situations in tandem with colleagues and community personnel.
  • Maintain accurate records of all psychological/counseling/social services rendered to students and teacher requests for consultation.
  • Develop accurate data tracking systems for accountability and timely interventions cycle as part of the SSP process.

Prevention:

  • The City View Counselor is responsible for delivering a comprehensive guidance program for all students in grades 6-8.
  • In addition, the school counselor will work with individual students who are experiencing specific challenges ranging from social skills, decision making, goal setting, peer relations, and self-regulation.
  • Work with the whole classroom and small groups of students on general guidance topics of concern to the school community, such as bullying, conflict resolution, self-regulation skills, and diversity awareness.
  • Identify and/or develop programs for children at risk of failing at school, based on needs assessments.
  • Implement and deliver programs and strategies to improve school climate, based on consultation, collaboration and observation at all grade levels.
  • Maintain regular communication, education, and outreach to strengthen the school to home connection.
  • Support and understand the EL Education model that our school implements.
  • Provides in-service training to faculty and parents as needed.

Other school responsibilities:

  • Participating in a summer staff development institute or retreat in August.
  • Attending and actively participating in bimonthly professional development and ‘All School Crew’ meetings.
  • Seeking out additional opportunities for professional development that will lead to achieving personal and school-wide professional development goals.
  • Attending and participating in school events. City View teachers are expected to attend 2-3 community events per year.
  • Building a culture of acceptance, diversity and inclusion among students.

Time Commitment

  • Position is Monday through Fridays, variable hours between 8-4.

Compensation Package

  • This is a .5 FTE position. Competitive salary range starting at $22,332 for Bachelor’s Step 0 to $38,724 for Master’s Step 10. The school counselor will work with 200 students in grades 6-8 and will contribute and collaborate with the counseling school team at the middle school and wellness room. Open to restricted counseling license if eligible.
  • 5 Days Paid Time Off (PTO) and 8 paid holidays
  • Required participation in Oregon PERS.

Requirements:

  • Valid Oregon School Counselor license from TSPC, all grade level endorsement preferred
  • Open to restricted Counseling license if eligible
  • Experience working with K-8 students preferred
  • Work effectively with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds

Employment is contingent upon passing a Federal (fingerprinting) background check as pursuant to ORS 326.603 & 326.607.
