Grades 9-12: School Counselor/Full-Time: Counselors of Mercy McAuley High School advise students and model the core values of Mercy McAuley: Faith, Compassion, Service, Leadership and Excellence. Counselors provide support emotionally and academically, so students achieve the fullest attainment of the mission and vision and to continue the charism of the Sisters of Mercy in the school.

Accountability: Counselors report to and are supervised and evaluated by the Principal in consultation with the President.

Essential Functions:

  • Academic Advising:
Provide individualized academic guidance to students, with a primary focus on course selection, graduation planning, and alignment with college and career goals.
Meet regularly with students to discuss grades, attendance, and academic progress; communicate proactively with teachers, parents, and administrators.

  • Student Services Team Member:
Collaborate with administrators, intervention specialists, and other members of the Student Services to proactively identify and address student needs.
Assist with standardized testing.

  • Student Support and Interventions:
Help connect students with academic and emotional interventions as needed, including tutoring, mental health resources, and external support services.

  • Conflict Mediation:
Mediate peer conflicts and help students develop constructive communication and problem-solving skills in alignment with Mercy values.

  • Student-Teacher Relationship Support:
Serve as a liaison between students and teachers to resolve misunderstandings or concerns, fostering mutual respect and academic growth.

  • Social-Emotional Development:
Promote student wellness by providing short-term counseling, crisis response, and referrals for ongoing support as needed.

  • Family and Community Collaboration:
Communicate with parents/guardians and work with outside professionals to ensure a holistic approach to student development.

  • Attend Parent/Teacher Conferences, Open House and two additional recruiting events, Baccalaureate Mass, Graduation, all employee and department meetings, and other times designated by the principal.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to professional standards, including the licensure code of conduct and contract terms.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism in attitude, behavior, communication, and appearance.
  • Demonstrate ethical conduct, respect confidentiality, and contribute to a collaborative school culture.
  • Participate in evaluation processes and professional development; maintain active involvement in professional organizations.
  • Engage in school governance by contributing input to policies and supporting decisions made through established channels.
  • Foster a respectful and supportive environment, celebrating the achievements of colleagues and addressing concerns through proper administrative channels.
  • Maintain documentation of student meetings and progress.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.

Student/Parent Relations:

  • Visit your mailbox before and after school and read the announcements in the weekly Staff Bulletin.
  • Check email and voicemail daily and respond within 24-48 hours.
  • Encourage attendance at extracurricular activities and special events by attending a few each year and by speaking positively about them to students and co-workers.
  • Be available to chaperone/breathalyze a minimum of one dance or proctor a placement test each school year. As a chaperone it is important that your presence be felt.
  • Set appropriate boundaries for student/teacher relationships.
  • Communicate with students and parents in a positive, professional manner.

Miscellaneous:

  • Exemplify Catholic principles. Refrain from any conduct or lifestyle which would discredit the school, cause scandal to the school or be in contradiction to Catholic doctrine or morals.
Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to Catholic education in an all-girls secondary environment.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the educational and religious values of the Sisters of Mercy.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills, and public relations.
  • Be committed to the success of students.

Educational and Professional Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Ohio License/certification for school counseling.
  • Support of the teachings of the Catholic church, Mercy values, and the mission and vison of Mercy McAuley High School
  • Available from 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. during the school year as well as occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Available as agreed upon with Administration over the summer months.
