Job Summary: The Community Economic and Empowerment Services (CEES) Family Advocate is responsible for providing wraparound support services to families enrolled in our housing programs that have been impacted by domestic violence, human trafficking/exploitation, or sexual violence.  The Family Advocate utilizes trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and culturally responsive practices to provide advocacy to the entire family unit as well as to individual family members. The Family Advocate arranges and participates in group facilitation, organized activities/field trips, intakes, goal planning, one-to-one sessions, and referrals to community providers. This position is also responsible for maintaining a welcoming, safe, clean, accessible, and inclusive environment for persons and families we serve.

Services are provided in office and in the community, including at partner sites. Work schedule includes days and evenings to accommodate our after-school program and participant scheduling needs. Occasional weekends may be required.

Experience/Qualifications:  
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience working with children and youth in advocacy, childcare or other related settings. Experience working with children and youth who have witnessed or experienced trauma is preferred.
  • Ability to work in individual and group settings with children and youth of all ages, parents, and the family as a unit. Ability to set and uphold professional boundaries.
  • Experience providing direct services and advocacy to individuals and families experiencing domestic violence, sexual violence, and/or human trafficking using a survivor-centered and trauma-informed approach. Knowledge and experience in working with diverse, marginalized and underrepresented communities, and anti-oppression work. 
  • Ability to welcome and engage a diverse group of stakeholders with a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of pre-school, elementary, and high school enrollment, Homeless McKinney Vento Act and school liaison and transportation processes. Understand and work from the agency’s set of values and philosophical approaches; including harms-reduction/housing first, trauma-informed care, violence as a learned behavior, client-centered and led work, etc.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in child development/early education, psychology, social work or related field or experience in the social service field are a plus.   
  • Valid driver’s license, insurance and reliable vehicle are required for this role.
Essential Functions:
  • Conduct intake session with every youth and parent/caregiver enrolled in our housing programs to assess strengths, goals, safety plans, and needs.
  • Assist with implementation of housing programs as needed, conducting intakes/enrollments, supporting households with housing searches and barrier reduction, and administering rental assistance.
  • Provide consistent and regular support for parents/caregivers and families through one-on-one sessions, community visits, family sessions, support groups, and Cornerstone-hosted events.
  • Assist with planning and running our after-school program for youth in K-12 th grade, including hiring and supervising program interns.
  • Coach parents/caregivers on basic parenting techniques with age-appropriate expectations, coping mechanisms, childcare, and health related referrals, in a compassionate manner.
  • Act as an advocate with and connection to referring agencies and partners including other domestic violence providers, schools, human services systems, and homelessness services, including homeless education liaisons.
  • Work with parents/caregivers to create an educational plan and ensure school enrollment/ attendance. Update and maintain education information and resources.
  • Collaborates with advocates in providing wraparound advocacy services for families participating in our other programming to provide comprehensive support for the entire family unit.
  • Assists individuals seeing services over the phone or in-person with support, information, and referrals as the need arises. Assures data entry is completed accurately in Apricot database and other tracking methods.
  • Create and maintain learning and play spaces to keep a safe, fun, and clean space for youth and families.  Properly documents all critical incidents: child protection reports, emergency response calls, and participant injury/cons.
