The IU Student Health Center provides comprehensive medical and mental health services, serving as a vital resource for student well-being. Effective health information management is critical to ensuring accurate patient records, regulatory compliance, and seamless healthcare operations. The Director of Health Information Management (HIM) leads these efforts, overseeing medical record integrity, coding accuracy, and compliance while driving operational efficiency across HIM functions.

Job Summary



In this key leadership role, the Director of HIM oversees all HIM activities that impact both clinical and administrative operations at the IU Student Health Center. This position is responsible for managing a dynamic team, ensuring adherence to health information standards, and fostering cross-departmental collaboration to enhance HIM operations and support high-quality patient care.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Supervises a dedicated team of 9.5 FTEs, addressing personnel management issues, and leading the execution of remote work policies and procedures.
  • Provides mentorship, training, and career development opportunities for HIM staff to enhance their skill sets and ensure a high level of performance.
  • Leads the daily operations of HIM services, including the release of medical information, transcription services, coding accuracy, appointment scheduling, and document management.
  • Collaborates with clinical and administrative departments to ensure seamless and efficient HIM workflows that support overall operations.
  • Delivers training programs for medical providers on diagnosis and procedural coding, ensuring the highest levels of accuracy and compliance with internal monitoring, auditing procedures, and industry standards.
  • Regularly assesses and updates HIM practices in alignment with evolving state and federal regulations to maintain compliance.
  • Develops, implements, and enforces HIM policies and procedures, ensuring they meet the highest standards of privacy, security, and compliance, and are aligned with applicable regulatory guidelines.
  • Oversees the development of qualitative and quantitative reviews of health records to ensure high-quality documentation and adherence to coding guidelines.
  • Serves as a go-to resource for HIM, Electronic Health Records (EHR), and coding issues, offering guidance and support to other departments across IU campuses.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert on health information management, advising on best practices, regulatory updates, and evolving industry trends.
  • Manages subpoenas and legal requests for health records, providing necessary documentation and expert testimony when required in court proceedings.

General Responsibilities

  • Provides day-to-day operational management of support staff.
  • Establishes short-term operational objectives.
  • Identifies operational issues and/or areas of improvement and implements solutions to improve processes and/or operational efficiency.
  • Analyzes, monitors, and evaluates performance of assigned staff; establishes work priorities, conducts performance reviews, and provides corrective action as needed.
  • Ensures adequate staffing and effective scheduling; participates and informs employment decisions for assigned staff.
  • Provides direct supervision and oversight of assigned staff and activities; impacts, and is held accountable for, the performance of team and/or assigned staff.
  • Ensures and provides training to assigned staff to improve user support operations; researches and identifies development opportunities for assigned staff.
  • Keeps next-level leader(s) informed of trends as well as significant problems.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in health services, business, management or related field)

Preferred

  • Master's degree in health services, business, management or related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years of program management or related experience

Preferred

  • 5 years of related functional experience

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Specialist, Physician Based (CCS-P) with American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)

Working Conditions / Demands



This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.

Advertised Salary



$73,000 - $83,000 annually, based on education and experience.
